Dancing Feat – Chapter 17

En route to Neiva.

Greenery

Hello Neiva, apparently there’s some kind of Party going on. I’m not sure how I know that, other than the MASSIVE INFLATABLE BOTTLE OF RUM.

Neiva

Off to the badlands.

Wiper

Oh those lands… they’re so bad. Bad lands, naughty lands etc…

They look like a nice couple. A vintage(ish) poster for the Bambuco Queen back in 2000.

Bambuco Queen

So this is Sanjuanito, which is kind of like Guaneña and has strong ties with northern Ecuador.

And this is the entirely different, though similarly named, El Sanjuanero – don’t they look happy?

This is the river parade. It looks pretty frickin treacherous to be honest.

And this is the chivas parade, where they seem how many things the can pile on top of / attach to the side of a bus and still have it move. I wouldn’t go under any low bridges, though.

The barras also go about attempting to bill-post their queen into the hearts of the judges.

Stick no bills

Here are all the potential Bambuco Queens, lined up on the stage at the end of the event.

Folkloric

Buck’s Fizz sing Making Your Mind Up as part of Song for Europe 1981, and show off that layered wardrobe idea.

Miss Colombia – so glad I was wearing my favourite t-shirt.

Miss Colombia

A special meal for a special event. This is Asado Huilense – pork cooked in an adobo of herbs and beer. The drink is sevillana, an egg-based creation with a sprinkling of nutmeg or cinnamon on top.

Another joyous parade. Why don’t we do this everywhere in the world?

The statue of Carlos Valderrama in Santa Marta, on the coast.

Carlos Valderrama

And finally we come to the crowning glory of the festival – the sanjuanero dance-off. Who will be crowned queen?
